Matthew Celentano

Maryland Citizens' Health Initiative

Matthew Celentano is the Deputy Director of the Maryland Citizens' Health Initiative, and the Health Care for All Campaign. He has been with the organization since January of 2002. In those years, the organization has had major victories for health care consumers. It helped expand the Medicaid program to 250,000 Marylanders years before the Affordable Care Act, exposed a drug company scheme to mislead churches and community groups, helped stop the conversion of the state’s largest non-profit insurer, passed significant legislation to provide cheaper prescription drugs, helped plan the implementation of the Affordable Care Act in Maryland, successfully led difficult campaigns to enact taxes on tobacco and alcohol to fund public health programs, and passed the landmark Fair Share Health Care bill.

Mr. Celentano’s responsibilities include outreach to organizations across the state including churches, labor, business, community and others where he would be the featured speaker. He also organizes the media outreach for the Maryland Citizens' Health Initiative and has produced dozens and dozens of featured press events over the years. In recent years his responsibilities have shifted to the point person and direct lobbying of state legislators and officials to pass legislation, and serve on health policy workgroups that will get the organization closer to the goal of quality, affordable Health Care for All Marylanders.

Matt is a Baltimore native that graduated from the University of Vermont with honors. He lives in rural Baltimore County with his wife Katie, and their three small children – Lucy, Annie, and Rio. In a previous life he was the head wrangler, rodeo amateur, and flyfishing guide of a guest ranch in rural Wyoming.
