Charlie Alfero

Southwest Center for Health Innovation
Mr. Alfero is the Executive Director of the Southwest Center for Health Innovation and the
founder of HMS, a Community Health Center providing primary medical, dental, mental health, family support, community development, and health policy services in southwestern New Mexico. He has over 38 years of experience in rural health policy, systems, and program development. Throughout his career, he has been Director of Rural Outreach for the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, and Director of the Community Health Services Division in the New Mexico Department of Health. Additionally, he is the current Director of the National Center for Frontier Communities and New Mexico Primary Care Training Consortium, and serves as Designated Institutional Official for the developing residency sponsoring institution at the Consortium.

Charlie has recently been on the Boards of National REACH Coalition and New Mexico Health Connections, a nonprofit health insurance co-op, as well as other organizations focused on health equity. He has overseen and directed multiple programs in New Mexico including New Mexico Health Resources, the State and National Health Service Corps programs, and FORWARD NM. He is also an Advisory Board member of the University of Iowa Rural Policy and Research Institute, and the University of Southern Maine Rural Research Center.
